Arkode Games was set up in 2019 by Joshua Ellis and Joshua Matthews with the goal of founding an indie games brand while learning the tools of the trade during their placement year. With a passion for games, the programmer/designer duo began developing their retro branding, social media presence and lead project: Reign of Rains.
The pitch for their project was a customizable role-playing game with a focus on player-driven content. Their original plan was to grow an audience through unconventional advertising methods and being active at conventions, but this was disrupted due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Development on their project slowed as access to resources became restricted, and eventually, Matthews stepped away from the business to focus on his studies.
It’s not all doom and gloom though! With such a shift in circumstances, Ellis has completely re-evaluated the state of the business while undertaking his final year, and Arkode’s branding has since undergone a more professional make-over. The business leans into its mission statement of assisting other developers in the sector, culminating in the creation of the Arkode Developer Hub on Discord, which has seen positive growth since January 2021.
Ellis has salvaged elements from the earlier tech demo and integrated them into his university modules so that development can continue, now under the project name IsoEngine. The sandbox and customisation elements of the demo have been emphasised, with a focus on fun. It’s being transformed into a multiplayer mini-game toolset, similar to Halo’s custom games or Minecraft’s mini-game servers, and has a promising future ahead of it.
