Luke Pearson: Enterprise Residency to self-employed

The Analogue Photography Company was started during a one-week Enterprise Residency placement with the Enterprise Team, allowing Luke to focus on a project in any discipline which would allow him to develop his skills.

The original outline of the business was to make and sell photographic journals, in which photographers could record the settings they used during a shoot with an Analogue Camera. The majority of journals lack the function of recording these details.

The intention behind the product was to aid and assist a photographer while out on a photoshoot to remember every setting and piece of equipment used for each photo in a well-structured and organised manner. This allows the photographer to focus more on shooting.

The business began to develop and grow after the placement. Luke has started repairing analogue cameras and lenses; due to analogue cameras ageing and seeing more use due to the resurgence of analogue photography, and there has been a greater need for repair.

The business offers a camera repair service, and Luke dismantles any that are beyond repair to salvage parts to repair other cameras, avoiding any unnecessary waste going to landfill.

Developing film is another key part of the business. Film development is done by hand in small batches to ensure the quality of development. The business develops 35mm and medium format, both C-41 colour negative and Black and White, but soon expanding into E-6 Slide film and expanding to large format development. Luke is also building a dark room for traditional printing.

Over the coming placement year at SHU Enterprise, the business will continue to grow and develop, expanding the reach of selling photographic journals worldwide. Another area of expanse for the business is to stock and sell film and camera, which will allow more people to experience analogue photography.

Luke joins our Work for Yourself sandwich year placement programme in September, further developing his business.
